The way we view Victorian England is often through a rose tinted lens of pomp and patriotism. While there’s a lot to enjoy through that lens, it’s also important that we look at the flip side of the era and give oxygen to the many Victorian rebels.
To mark the King’s coronation we present to you artist and enemy of the state Mr Teddy Henderson. Mr Henderson was an obscure London painter and sculptor who used his craft to challenge that very pomp and patriotism. His work, once on public display, would cause outrage. Within 12 hours he’d be placed in the clink, and his art and studio would be burnt to the ground.
The first three images are of his only surviving work. Photograph #1 is an impressive sculptor called The Queen’s Throne. Photograph #2 is Let Us Eat Cake. Photograph #3 is called Bouncy Windsor Castle. Photograph #4 is his last known mugshot.
Have a lovely weekend and God save the rebels.
