Quoth the Raven “Nevermore”

Photograph #1
Photograph #2
Photograph #3

We know that Edgar Allan Poe spent several of his formative years in London. Some scholars also believe that Poe set many of his stories in the capital and had returned there over the years to rekindle childhood memories.

As can be seen in photographs #1 and #2, it is believed that he would spend some time walking across London Bridge over and over, taking inspiration from the architecture as much as the people.

While very convincing, we know that photograph #1 can’t possibly be real because it would have to predate the approximate years that cameras were in wide circulation (1829-1835). However, technically speaking, the same can’t be said of photograph #2. Cameras were in wider circulation around 1849 and were technologically capable of taking such a photograph.

But to be clear: here at the Fellowship we don’t seriously believe that photograph #2 depicts Poe during his final year on earth, about to leave behind some of the best Gothic literature ever gifted to humanity.

That said, we know that photograph #3 is real. You may have heard of the mystery ‘Poe Toaster’ who visits Poe’s grave in Baltimore, Maryland on the 19th of January every year. On the same day in England, you will find the ‘Poe Raven’. He slowly crosses the London Bridge wearing a mask and huge bird wings. When he reaches the other side, he spreads his wings and disappears into the night sky.

Many thanks for reading. Enjoy the rest of your week.
