In rural areas in Victorian England, the main reason for disputes was land boundaries. As most people couldn’t afford legal representation, people came up with their own solution.
In order to resolve the matter between themselves, they decided that they would emulate the jolly old medieval resolution system of jousting. However, instead of shining armour and horseback, they would be given 6 months to design a ‘war tractor’. They would then go head to head in front of an independent referee. First tractor to become inoperable loses.
These photographs were taken in rural Berkshire. They show some of the most innovative tractor designs in history which were only used to batter other tractors. Afterwards the two drivers would shake hands and would comply with the referee’s decision. They would then get horribly drunk and celebrate the winner.
Have a splendid week.
